Caregivers Get Burnt Out, Too!

Yet, some just won't say it...

Self-care is a major part of being a caregiver. Knowing when to step back, take a break, or include "me time" in your schedule can be difficult at times, mainly because the demand of caring for someone is solely dependent upon you. Pretty much, all of your focus is on the one you're caring for.
Some people don't take the much needed break, because of guilt or worry. Personally, I know firsthand that my break is essential. Being a mother of a child diagnosed with cerebral palsy and a host of other medical conditions, nearly strapped me down. My daughter Char'lee has become my main focus. Not to mention, I have other able-bodied kids who still need me, too. And let's not even talk about trying to keep my house cleaned. Wait! How can I forget about my husband who needs me, too!
Even though they all help out, as the mother, I still have to "manage-it-all" because of my fears for my daughter, Char'lee. So if you've ever felt like you're at the point of burn out, I know how it feels to be stretched too thin. I know what it feels like to want to pull your hair out. Yet, when I decided to do something about getting back to me, that made all the difference in the world not only for me, but for my daughter, my other two children, and my husband.
As a matter of fact, I am a better caregiver today, because I make time to go shopping for me, hang out with friends, go to the spa, or do whatever it is that I want to do. I LOVE my family. But what I've learned over time is loving me equals loving them.
